Paddy In The Morning 2016

When are you on air?

Weekdays 6.00am - 10.00am

Saturday 12.00pm -2.00pm

Full name?

Patrick Billington (Paddy)

Got a family?

I'm lucky to have 2 wonderful children! Isabella is 7 going on 17 and Leo is a feisty 5 year old! They love living a short walk from the beach, which is our favourite place to spend time together!

Tell us about your show...

The show is a reflection of my total passion and pride for this area! I get out at every opportunity to get local voices on air, to promote charity events and to get involved in as many things as possible from Whitby to Brid and everywhere in between. I'm very open about my life on air and I'd like to think people feel they know me really well. I do a feature called "Street Of The Week" which sees me visiting 8 or 9 local businesses on one street and air these casual chats on air that week. The kids love playing "Traffic Light Bingo" on their way to school at 8:40am when they can get points if they can see a traffic light at the moment I play a car horn sound effect! I do WOOHOOS for anyone celebrating anything at 8:15am each day! And I like to get the biggest stars on Yorkshire Coast Radio. Recent guests include Robbie Williams and Rod Stewart! It's brilliant getting the big names on and it shows how the radio station has grown in recent years - these big names see the value of giving us their time one morning to promote their new albums!

Hobbies round here?

I love going for a run round Marine Drive in Scarborough. From my flat, once round the drive and back works out at 10K so I always aim to do at least that far! I enjoy playing 5 or 6-a-side football too and exploring our stunning coastline. I always enjoy being outdoors!. I also try and watch Scarborough Athletic when I can. Up the Boro!

Starsign?

Aries. Let me be more specific: April 12th. Just in case you feel obliged to wish me Happy Birthday! I'm 35 currently!

What was your first job?

Working in the basement at Costcutter on Ramshill Road in Scarborough. They said I could work my way up from the bottom but I never made it to the shop floor! Then I started doing talks about the fish & seals at Scarborough Sealife Centre!

What was the first song you bought?

It was actually Mariah Carey's Without You on CD. My first tape was Pato Banton's Baby Come Back, somewhat cooler than the Mariah song!

What was your nickname at school?

Billers. Surname’s Billington. So they’ve taken the “Bill” and…

What has been your best radio moment?

We are very lucky to be able to change people's lives in this job. And through charity challenges like the Bridlington Half Marathon for the Katie Walker Cancer Trust, or the Whitby to Bridlington run for Legs For Angel or the Slash sleep-outs on the street for homeless people, I'm lucky to have the opportunity to raise money with the help of an army of local listeners and businesses who help me/ Those moments are the best. The celebrity interviews, hosting the Open Air Theatre concerts in front of 7,000 are great too, but it's the changing people's lives which is most rewarding! Oh and the annual Christmas story too!

... and the worst?

My chair collapsed as I talked live on air once. You could hear me crash to the ground then laugh like a girl as I tried to carry on.. And I left the microphone live during my first ever radio competition. All you could hear over the song was me answering the phone!

What career would you have chosen if you weren't working in Radio?

I do actually do other things aside from the radio! I have my own tourism website www.visitscarborough.com and I DJ people's weddings and birthday parties and host events! I'm also into videography so would love to maybe do TV Documentaries one day! But I'm very happy doing my perfect job here right now!

What are the things that really wind you up?

I’m the most chilled-out person on the coast. But... salad-bar etiquette! When people go the wrong way along the salad-bar! Grrrrrrrr!

Who would you most like to interview?

I’ve put a request in to U2’s people to get them to pop in one morning and do an accoustic set in the studio. I’ll let you know when it’s all confirmed. I’m sure they will get back to one of the 700 emails soon.

Favourite film:

I like Rom-Coms. There I said it. I like manly macho ones too. I've also been an extra in a film shot in Scarborough.. A Chorus Of Disapproval starring Anthony Hopkins amongst others! I had to suck a lolly on Scarborough's North Bea Beach!

Favourite TV show as a child:

Thomas The Tank Engine & Postman Pat. And Danger Mouse. And Banana Man.. All brilliant. Pat has a helicopter these days. The benefits of having small children means I get to enjoy these shows all over again!

Favourite TV show as an adult:

Spooks was amazing and then it ended. The Missing is gripping. But I don't watch much TV. I’m a bit of a geek so I like watching the news. And even more so, the weather. So I'll say the weather forecast!

Favourite song:

Simple Minds’ Don’t You Forget About Me.

Favourite food:

Fish & Chips with mushy peas and tonnes of salt & vinegar joint top with a Roast Beef Dinner and Large Donner Kebab with everything on!

Favourite place on the Yorkshire Coast:

It has to be Scarborough as it’s been my home all my 35 years of life. The beaches, the cliffs, the gardens, the people. I love it with a real passion. Here’s a list of some other jewels round here: Filey Brigg. The coves at Flamborough, Robin Hood’s Bay, Falling Foss, Hayburn Wyke, Bempton Cliffs, Cornelian Bay near Knipe Point, Troutsdale, Dalby Forest.. Beck Hole.. the list goes on!

Favourite item of clothing:

I buy a lot of shirts! If I see a nice shirt when looking round the shops, I'll probably have to buy it! I may only have one pair of jeans and 67 other shirts but I'll always buy a shirt!

Favourite holiday destination:

I’ve been so lucky to visit so many places. Over 80 countries in fact! But there’s a magic about Iceland which is drawing me back. The price of a beer there is keeping me away.
