Four Day Cricket Festival In Scarborough

Scarborough Cricket Club

Published at 6:02am 18th August 2019.

It is the start of Scarborough's cricket festival.

The town has hosted county championship cricket since 1876.

The four day event will see Yorkshire County Cricket Club play Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club from 11am at North Marine Road.

Vice President of Scarborough Cricket Club, Bill Mustoe, said:

"It is one of the iconic grounds in the country; it is just a wonderful place in the middle of an unexpected location.

The first time I went there, I went down North Marine Road and I thought 'there can't be a cricket club, it's surrounded by houses and the sea on one side'.

Then you go down this little ginnel, and it opens up in front of you and it is the most magnificent cricket ground.

This is just a wonderful festival and it means such a lot to the coast, the area and the town.

Over this year, 30 to 40 thousand people will visit the ground.

They spend in the area probably over £4 million in terms of supporting the economy; whether it's hotels, guest houses or restaurants."
