Defender Burgess Joins Boro

Published at 3:00pm 6th June 2018.

Scarborough Athletic have announced the signing of defender Kevin Burgess from National League North side Darlington.

The 31 year old centre half joins the Seadogs after terminating his contract with the Quakers earlier this week.

Burgess is no stranger to the Yorkshire Coast, having previously turned out for Boro's rivals Whitby Town.

Speaking of his move, he said:

“I can’t wait to get started, joining up with Leon again and my new team mates to try to get us promotion.

That is the main aim without a doubt, I’ve helped Darlington get out of the division that Scarborough are going into so I know what it takes.

It’s about being consistent, getting a result on a Tuesday night away from home when you haven’t played as well as you’d like.”

Burgess, who came through the youth ranks at Middlesbrough, initially joined Darlington back in 2007, before an initial loan spell at Whitby Town led to a permanent move to the Turnbull Ground in 2008.

After enjoying 7 seasons with the Blues, making 276 appearances, the centre-back moved back to Darlington in the summer of 2015 when the North-East side were promoted into the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

In his first season Burgess captained the Quakers to the Northern Premier League title, then making the step up to establish himself as a regular in the middle of defence in the National League North the following year.

After finding opportunities limited at Blackwell Meadows in the early stages of last season, the Darlington skipper was made available for transfer in September 2017, going on to spend the second half of the campaign on loan at former side Whitby Town to steer Chris Hardy’s side away from the relegation zone.

But Burgess is keen to push Boro on to finish as high as possible next season. He added:

“I’m a leader, I organise the players around me and make sure that I win my headers and aerial battles.

I love a tackle, I love putting my body on the line and winning football matches to help get the club up into the National League.”

Burgess is the sixth new signing for Scarborough Athletic ahead of the 2018/19 season, joining Wayne Brooksby, Bailey Gooda, Ross Killock, Josh Lacey and Leon Scott.
