Whitby Town remain top of the Evo-Stick Northern Premier following a 1-0 win over Matlock Town.

Dale Hopson's second half strike was enough for the home side to take all three points despite a battling performance from Matlock.

The visitors had lost only once since September and that was a loss to National League North side Altrincham in the FA Cup.

The only game came against the run of play just after the hour mark. A cross from the left by Dan McWilliams was headed down by Matthew Tymon and Hopson was on hand to tuck in his side footed effort into the bottom corner.

The win leaves Whitby in top spot on 37 points, just a  point ahead of second placed Blyth Spartans.

The Blues now travel to Shaw Lane this coming Saturday in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy.
