30 Choirs Head to Whitby

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 7:03am 16th July 2011.

Whitby will be the destination this weekend for over 30 choirs when Whitby Community Choir once again hosts the National Streetchoir Festival.  The festival, now in its 29th year, is a rolling event which takes place in a different location every year, and will be coming to Whitby for the second time in three years.

Whitby Community Choir last hosted the event only two years ago in 2009, but with no-one coming forward to host the 2011 festival, Whitby was approached and were more than happy to fill the breach .

With choirs coming from as far a-field as Wales, Brighton, Edinburgh  and the Calder Valley and everywhere between the weekend will be a three day bonanza of song.

Starting with a Welcome Concert featuring Whitby Sings -NYMAZ young singers; Whitby Community Choir; singer Sam Dunkley; local folk duo The Moorlanders and the not to be missed O'Hooley and Tidow,  all topped off with a high energy ceilidh featuring the cream of local musicians.

On Saturday all the choirs will parade from the Spa to Crescent Gardens for 12 noon, where Local Choir Leader and Singer, Rebecca Gross  the Festival’s Musical Director will lead over 700 voices in the Mass Sing  before the choirs disperse to sing and busk around the town.

Later on Saturday afternoon the choirs will regroup at the Spa Pavilion  Complex for the first of two concerts featuring more than thirty choirs of all sizes, in the Northern Light Suite beginning at 3:30, with the evening concert running from 7 until 11.  Tickets for these concerts, and the Friday concert will be available on the door.
