Published by Karen Liu at 7:56am 26th June 2020.

Whitby Coastguard Rescue Team have been called out to reports of a number of people cut off under the East Cliff in the town.

They were tasked by Humber Coastguard Operations Centre yesterday (Thursday 25th June) at 5.15pm.

Three officers with water rescue equipment were sent to rescue three people who had become cut off.

Due to the depth between the location and the safety of the East Pier, it was decided that the safest and driest method of bringing all three back to safety was by the Inshore Lifeboat.

Whitby Coastguard Rescue Team said:

"We hope that this incident underlines the importance of checking the weather and tidal conditions before you set out so that you can prepare accordingly.

There are a wide variety of websites and mobile apps which can be used.

Remember if you see anyone in trouble on the coast dial 999 and ask the Coastguard."
