New Social Distancing Rules Welcomed by Scarborough Tourism Businesses

Published by Jon Burke at 6:31am 24th June 2020.

'Reducing social distancing from 2 metres to 1 gives tourism businesses on the Yorkshire coast a chance.'

That's from Chairman of Scarborough's South Bay Traders' Association, John Senior.

He's been reacting to the announcement yesterday that from July the 4th, restaurants, pubs, hairdessers and cinemas will be allowed to open.

John said:

"It gives us a chance to actually get open and operate in something like normal, sensible, terms. We are obviously going to have to take great care, open up the tables and use mitigating factors like screens and PPE for waiting-on staff and those, I'm sure, working in pubs - but it does at least give the sector a fighting chance. At 2 metres, it was just impossible.

It has to be safe, of course. Remember, we are still in the throes of a pandemic worldwide and whilst this is a very welcome measure, we mustn't forget that it isn't over yet. So, we've just got to keep that in the back of our minds and make sure that our staff and customers are in a safe environment."

He's been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Jon Burke..
