Construction Of Observation Wheel Begins In Scarborough

Published by Local Democracy Reporter Carl Gavaghan at 10:24am 22nd June 2020. (Updated at 5:22pm 22nd June 2020)

Construction has begun on Scarborough‘s seafront on the observation wheel and adventure golf course that was due to open on the site of the former Futurist Theatre earlier this year.

Observation Wheel UK, which ran the 32-metre high wheel operated on the site throughout the summer season in 2019, should have been operating the attractions from April before the coronavirus lockdown came into force.

The company has now started construction on the site, which is expected to take two weeks.

The wheel will be the same as last year, capable of carrying a maximum of 144 passengers with six people seated in each of its 24 enclosed gondolas.

New for 2020 would be Captain Jack’s Adventure Golf, an 18-hole family golf course, to be positioned directly adjacent to the observation wheel.

Observation Wheel UK director, Michael Wallis, said it would be able to operate on the site within the social distancing guidelines.

He said:

“The restrictions are easing and it looks like more things will be opening up in July. In fact, this morning it sounds like that the two-metre rule could be reduced to one metre before then.

It will take two weeks for us to get set up on the site so that will take us through to July.

We can operate the wheel within the guidelines as it is just one family to pod so there is no risk there, there will be distancing and we can rotate the pods in and out of use as we need them throughout the day.

There will also be sanitiser stations and everything so it will be good to go.”

Mr Wallace said that the company could look to operate beyond September due to the reduced season.

This site would make a good market stall area for tourists like the big one other side of Bridlington.
