No Face Mask Fines Issued By Humberside Police

Published by Local Democracy Reporter Joe Gerrard at 7:17am 22nd June 2020.

No one in East Yorkshire has been fined for failing to wear a face mask on public transport following the recent introduction of stricter rules.

Humberside Police said officers had not handed out any £100 fines since they were given powers to do so from Monday June 15.

A spokesperson for the force said the “overwhelming majority” of people in Hull and the East Riding were following government guidance.

Police forces across England were given the power to issue £100 on the spot fines after the coronavirus lockdown was eased at the start of this month.

The Humberside Police spokesperson said:

“We can confirm that we have not had to issue any fines to people for failing to comply with wearing face coverings.

The overwhelming majority of people have listened to the Government advice, complying with the guidelines.

Our policing approach at Humberside Police continues to use common sense and discretion.

Officers continue to deliver day to day policing and where we see potential breaches, we strive to engage, explain and encourage members of the public to comply with the latest rules.

As before, we only use enforcement where we feel we have no other option.”

More than 3,000 extra staff, including police officers, were deployed to stations across England to help enforce new rules on face coverings in public. The changes also applied to visitors to NHS hospitals.

Public transport passengers will be prevented from boarding buses and trains if they refuse to cover their face. Penalty charges apply to those who repeatedly refuse to do so.

Rules apply on buses, coaches, trains, trams, the London Underground, ferries and planes.

Children aged under 11, the disabled and people with certain health conditions are exempt.
