UK First For Flamingo Land As It Mixes Cheetahs and Rhinos

Flamingo Land says it has done a UK first and has mixed cheetahs and rhinos in an enclosure.

The attraction has been closed due to the Coronavirus lockdown and has recently re-opened its zoo.

It is welcoming visitors, with social distancing measures in place, as part of the government's easing of restrictions.

Ross Snipp, Park Executive, said:

"This has been a long process that started August last year when our cheetahs arrived, three brothers.

We've always had a plan to mix them with our white rhinos, but because they arrived late in the summer, we didn't get a chance to do over the winter and into the spring, and then with the lockdown and with the quieter days, we took advantage.

It's the first time it's been done in the UK, mixing rhinos and cheetahs, which people will know, live together on the savannas in Africa.

Its gone really well. It's a simple principle, a rhino is too big for a cheetah to eat and a cheetah is too fast for a rhino to catch, and as long as they remember that, it'll be fine but so far so good."

Ross has been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Paddy in the Morning:

Flamingo Land says due to the on-going restrictions, it cannot open the aquarium, reptile area or play areas.

Park owner, Gordon Gibb, said:

"During the lockdown our focus has been on looking after and protecting our animal collection.

We care for some of the most threatened animals on the planet and their welfare is our priority.

I am pleased that we are now able to welcome guests back and share our beloved animal collection with them."

Flamingo Land says it cares for two Southern white rhinoceros called Bruce and Mabaso, and three Northern cheetahs called Sean, Ciaran and Okassie, who are at the zoo as part of the European breeding programme.
