Scarborough Borough Businesses Reminded To Apply For Grant

Published by Karen Liu at 12:19pm 17th June 2020.

Businesses across the Borough of Scarborough are being reminded to apply for the Government's discretionary business grant scheme.

The Council says it has paid out around £60 million so far to those who pay business rates.

But it says it has been given more money to hand out to firms who do not pay business rates, has had to close, or has suffered a big drop in income due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Liz Colling, Deputy Leader of Scarborough Borough Council, said:

"There are some criteria that the Government's put in place that you have to meet, but it's given us some powers to spread the money where we think it might be needed.

So perhaps bed and breakfast premises, who may have a couple of letting rooms who pay council tax, rather than business rates.

They're also applicable if you're a business that pays rent, but perhaps doesn't pay business rates like the market hall for example.

They're not fixed amount of money and the amount that a business will get will depend very much on how many more applicants we have.

If you've not had a grant, please look at see. If you're not at all sure, I would urge you to put your application in and our teams will sift them out.

We've rejected about 10 who weren't eligible for a number of reasons."
