Plans Unveiled For Temporary Car Park In Filey

Published by Local Democracy Reporter Carl Gavaghan at 11:07am 10th June 2020.

A new pay and display car park could be created in Filey under a new plan unveiled this week.

Thompson Homes want to create a temporary facility on the former Gas Showrooms site in Station Avenue.

Following the demolition of the showroom the site was earmarked for the future expansion of Filey Surgery so any change of use for the land cannot be permanent.

In plans lodged with Scarborough Council, the developer states that the car park would be able to hold 32 cars and is in prime position for the use of Filey Station.

The application adds:

“After purchasing the site speculatively, as part of their normal land acquisition process, Thompson Property and their development company, Thompson Homes, have been unable to justify residential development of the site, as it does not meet the necessary funding criteria.”

The car park would operate until another permanent scheme is proposed.

The application concludes:

“A car park will ensure that the site is maintained and usefully employed until better times may bring about a need for a worthier development of the site.”

The site was earmarked for extension of Filey Surgery and as such a permanent change of use is not allowed.

So why does a property developer but it and then realise they can't make a permanent change, so they apply for use as a car park.

Is this the same company that wanted to build on the Three Tuns Car Park and then put Parking Eye in to get cash out out of the car park.

There is already a good size Pay & Display car park behind Tesco.

two things come to mind, where would the entrance/exit be and do we really need another car park there as the pay and display one behind Tesco's only gets used to capacity for a few weeks in summer. The rest of the time it is half empty at least.
