Donations Wanted For Beach Wheelchair For Whitby Children

Donations Wanted For Beach Wheelchair For Whitby Children

A crowdfunder has been set up to help children with hidden disabilities and impairments in Whitby.

WHISH supports families of those children with disabilities or impairments like autism, epilepsy and ADHD.

It is looking to buy a 'floating' wheelchair so the children can enjoy the beach and go into the sea, just like their friends and family.

Yvonne Harrison, a project worker at the charity, said:

"We've always known that it's been difficult for our children to get on the beach; and if they can manage to get on the beach, they can't go in the sea.

We've seen these beach wheelchairs in other towns very successfully and it's been something we've had on our wish list for quite a long time.

It will improve their self confidence and one thing we also do is we have swimming lessons.

We teach children with disabilities to swim, either in small groups or one-to-one, so this matches in quite nicely with that."
