Scarborough's 'Great Get Together 2020' Goes Virtual

Scarborough's 'Great Get Together 2020' Goes Virtual

Published by Jon Burke at 4:17pm 2nd June 2020.

We Are Scarborough and Say Hello Coast have come together to organise three competitions, which they hope will inspire Yorkshire coast residents to get together in a creative and fun way that everyone can share in.

The competitions have been inspired by the Jo Cox Foundation’s Great Get Together event, which seeks to celebrate Jo’s life and her vision of bringing people together.

Scarborough has joined in with the national Great Get Together celebrations for the last three years and rather than miss out this year, organisers have decided to go ahead in a way that will safely bring people together in celebration of the town, the borough and key workers.

The plan is to hold three competitions around the theme of Scarborough Fair, which has brought the people of the Yorkshire coast together for centuries. The original fair dates back to the early middle ages when it was akin to the town’s market day. More recently it is a funfair popular with families and young people. The song Scarborough Fair has iconic status as a traditional English ballad made famous around the world by Simon & Garfunkel.

The three competitions are:

·       A postcard competition

·       A song lyric competition

·       A multi genre competition for writers, poets, model makers and performers

All three competitions will have first and second prizes for entrants who are 11 and under, 12 to 18 years and over 18.

The project is open to everyone. All those posting entries should bear in mind that the competitions are family friendly.

For more information about the Great Get Together, full details about how to enter the competitions and Scarborough Fair and its history, people should visit facebook.com/TheGreatGetTogetherScarborough or wearescarborough.co.uk

The closing date for competition entries is midnight on Monday 15 June. The winners will be announced online during the Great Get Together weekend of 19 to 21 June.

Scarborough Borough Council Community Safety and Safeguarding Manager, Sandra Rees, said:

“Never more so than now, we need to harness the power of communities to come together, albeit in a virtual way, to create hope and positivity. I encourage residents to join in with the competitions, which are a fun and innovative way to celebrate Jo’s life and vision.”

Project organiser and Community Cohesion Officer for North Yorkshire County Council, Tony Quinn,  said:

“Jo Cox and her foundation continue to provide inspiration. Her now famous maiden speech to parliament stating that: ‘We are more united and have far more in common than that which divides us,’ has proved to be truer than ever by the way communities have come together in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hopefully people will join in the fun and share their talents, memories and thoughts about Scarborough Fair and all that it means for us who live on the Yorkshire Coast.

I’d like to give thanks to the individuals and organisations who have rallied around to get this idea off the ground at short notice with special mention to Scarborough Museums Trust, Mark Gordon Music, Mal Farrelly of the Modern Scarborough Fair, Beyond Housing, Sandra Rees at Scarborough Borough Council, Karen Atkinson from Say Hello Coast, Chloe Taylor at We Are Scarborough, James Koppert from North Yorkshire County Council and Jonny Rowe for his artwork.”

Christine Rostron, from Scarborough Museums Trust, said:

"We loved taking part in The Great Together last year and are sorry we can't be together in person this year. However, we will be united both in spirit and digitally and are delighted to support this year's event. Inspired by our unique collections and locality we're providing 'inspiration sheets' featuring artwork by Scarborough artists Vivien Steiner and Helen Ventress, to help you start creating your own postcards. We can't wait to see the entries for the postcard competition and hope everyone has fun taking part."
