Preperations Underway for Reopening of Yorkshire Coast Shops

Published by Matthew Pells at 6:01am 31st May 2020.

Planning for the reopening of shops on the Yorkshire Coast is underway after the Government this week said that all non-essential shops will be able to reopen from June 15th.

Liz Colling is deputy leader at Scarborough Borough Council  - she thinks different businesses will take different approaches to reopening.

Cllr Colling has some concerns about the amount of footfall in some areas of the Borough and thinks there will be a cautious approach from retailers.

Richard Flinton, Chief Executive of North Yorkshire County Council, also thinks that there could be issues in areas with limited space outside shops:

"People will want to try and do more trading outside.

There's going to be queuing when we get to the 15th of June, presumably people wanting to go into retail premises, will queue up outside those as well as the general footfall on footpaths.

So we're going to have to think all of that through, work with our borough council colleagues and try to understand how we enable places to get some businesses, but also to make sure people feel safe and are safe."
