East Riding Schools Asked To Reopen Week Later

Published by Karen Liu at 12:15pm 28th May 2020.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has outlined what is happening with its schools next week.

It is in response to government plans to start re-opening them from Monday.

It has led to concerns from parents, teachers, and unions about the risks involved.

Richard Burton, Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

"Our position is one of being cautious  and we are very much mindful of the  schools getting these plans in place.

Our advice is we're wanting them to consider deferring the implement of any plan until Monday the 8th; so it gives themselves another week to enable them to get necessary plans in place.

All schools have their own work they're doing in regards to plans and putting bits in place.

It's a case of working with all the community, unions and staff to ensure that we can do it as safely as possible.

It's about getting everything in place in the right time to make sure it's all safe.

We just feel as though at this moment in time, we just need a little bit more time and that's the feedback we've been getting."

Richard has been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Matthew Pells:
