Filey Flood Scheme to Start 'Within Weeks'

Filey Flood Scheme to Start 'Within Weeks'

Published by Jon Burke at 6:31am 28th May 2020.

After 18 years, measures to protect Filey from flooding are finally going ahead.

Work on the town's Flood Alleviation Scheme started in 2002, after the first major incident, followed by another in 2007.

It's hoped the building of what will basically be a ditch around the area, to collect excess rainwater, could be finished by the end of the year.

Filey councillor, Mike Cockerill, said:

"I have been informed that all the hurdles to the FFAS have now been jumped.

This is tremendous news, at long, long last we are to see the start of the construction of the Filey Flood Alleviation Scheme.

I understand one final report is in preparation to allow the contractor to be engaged and that the work is likely to start within the next few weeks.

The first major flood event took place on Saturday, 10 August 2002, so we have been working towards this announcement for nigh on 18 years.

When we first spoke to consulting engineers we were told that it could take 5 or 6 years to jump through all the hoops to design a scheme, secure funding, obtain any necessary permissions before work could start to construct the scheme.

·      During the work to complete all of those steps there have been a number of setbacks, e.g. Government funding was not available

·      Applications had to be reworked due to a change in documentation.

·      Opportunities to progress steps concurrently rather than consecutively were not always taken.

We have had a number of false starts where we believed the start was in the not too distant future but further problems occurred.

We secured the final funding towards the end of 2016, planning was granted and, in early 2017, the Borough Council authorised the work to start as soon as land transactions were complete, however the  land transactions were only completed a couple of months ago.

However, that is all history now.

I understand one final but straight forward report is in preparation to allow the contractor to be engaged and that the work is likely to start within the next few weeks.

The solution is a relatively straightforward one, dig a ditch round Filey to divert the surface water draining off the higher agricultural land and store it until the town’s system can handle it. Sounds simple but it has taken all those years to bring all the elements together

Filey has been lucky that it has not suffered another major flood event over the years we have been waiting for the work to start."
