Hopes For New Scarborough Nightclub To Open End Of Year

The operators of a new nightclub in Scarborough is hoping to open by the end of this year.

It is after a premises licence was granted last week by the Borough Council.

'Decades Bar' will based at the old Mansion nightclub building on Aberdeen Walk.

North Yorkshire Police objected to the proposals, saying it is in a cumulative impact zone, which could bring crime and disorder.

Martin Weaver, Operations Manager of Decades Bar Scarborough, said:

"We were fully prepared to sort of have to go and prove ourselves; and the thing that we really wanted to prove was that because of what Decades is, the sort of genre of music that goes out from there, we attract a different clientele generally.

We were looking at introducing things like a dress code and we have very strict policies in place in terms of searching, drugs and behaviour.

We wont be opening at the moment while social restrictions are in place, because any nightclub really does rely on volume of people to come in because it's the atmosphere too, it's for people's safety.

You know, putting some screens up in the bar just won't really cut it. How do we keep all our customers safe? Particularly when they've had a little drink.

Work will commence again soon though on planning to get open, but we're looking much towards Christmas."

Martin has been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Karen Liu:
