Seal Pup Found With Cable Tie Around Neck In Scarborough

There has been an 'intentional' attack on a seal pup in Scarborough.

The animal care team at SEA LIFE Scarborough received a call on 27th April from a concerned member of the public who believed the animal had been caught up in netting on Cornelian Bay.

But, when the SEA LIFE team arrived, they discovered that the seal pup had cable ties wrapped extremely tight around its neck in what they say appears to have been an intentional attack.

The rescue team managed to cut the animal free before the cable tie broke its skin, caused more harm or even death.

Displays supervisor, Todd German who led the rescue, said:

“If, as it appears to be, this is an intentional attack on a seal pup then it is an extremely cruel act and not one which we have seen in Scarborough before.

Whilst we frequently rescue and rehabilitate injured seals and pups from across the Scarborough coastline, especially during pupping season, it is extremely rare to be called to rescue seals which look to have been so viciously attacked by humans.”

The young pup was only left with a patch of missing fur after its ordeal and, thanks to the work of SEA LIFE Scarborough’s Animal Care Team, was able to be returned straight back into the wild after its rescue.

It's a common fact that people who perpetrate acts of cruelty on small mammals often go onto larger ones like babies, children and women.

There are some sick people in this community, sad to say.
