Community Enterprise Near Scarborough Awarded Grant

Published by Karen Liu at 7:38am 13th May 2020.

Raincliffe Woods Community Enterprise near Scarborough has been awarded a £113,000 grant.

It is responsible for managing 222 hectares of local woodland and has won the money from independent trust Power to Change.

The grant, part of the trust’s Community Business Fund, will allow the company to employ a woodland manager to look after the development of the woods on a daily basis.

Raincliffe Woods Community Enterprise took over the management of the three woods, Raincliffe Wood, Row Brow Wood and Forge Valley Wood, from Scarborough Borough Council in 2015 and in 2019 was granted a 30 year lease to sustainably manage the return of the woods to ancient woodland status.

A board of directors, all volunteers, who are members of the local community lead the enterprise. Last year they sold 1100 tonnes of wood to a local firewood business. Part of their business plan is to remove many of the larch trees, as well as thin out trees enabling light to reach the ground, encouraging plants, wild flowers and ferns to flourish. They have been re-planting trees to add variety to the woods and attract more birds.

Director Robert Peacock said:

“This grant will enable us to employ a skilled professional who can develop the business plan and expand the range of activities that currently take place in the woods.

Providing safe access for pedestrians and cyclists needs further development to allow everyone who wants to use the woods to do so easily.”
