Scarborough Town Centre Footfall Numbers Beginning to Creep Up

nAfter an initial drop in the number of people visiting Scarborough town centre during lockdown, the figures have begun to slowly creep back up over the last month.

Footfall figures from the Borough Council, show that in the first week of lockdown there was a huge drop of nearly 67 per cent in the numbers of people in the town centre, compared to the week before and 77 per cent on the same week in 2019.

The weekly number continued to fall the following week, before slowly picking up again, although the overall number of people in the town centre has remained over 70% lower than the same weeks last year.

First week of lockdown - 23-29 March - down 66.7% on week before

30 March - 5 April - down 12.5% on week before

6-12 April UP 10.7% on the week before

13-19 April UP 12.4%  on the week before

20-26 April UP 5.1% on the week before

The year-on-year data shows that the footfall in the town centre from 23 March to 26 April, has been down by at least 70 per cent, compared with the equivalent weeks in 2019.

The numbers will start to increase as more shops start to open, this will be a good thing, as long as we keep the virus from spreading.
