New Colourful Bank Holiday Buses on Yorkshire Coast

New Colourful Bank Holiday Buses on Yorkshire Coast

Published by Jon Burke at 12:02pm 6th May 2020.

Bus drivers from local bus company East Yorkshire will wear colourful clothes over the bank holiday weekend to put smiles on the faces of passengers and show their support for fellow key workers.

Drivers at the Scarborough and Hull depots will swap their uniforms for bright outfits, and the more adventurous may even go for a red, white and blue theme to celebrate V.E. Day.

The colourful clothes weekend follows a similar initiative over the Easter weekend, when bus drivers showed their support for the key workers they take to work each day by dressing up in rainbow outfits.

East Yorkshire’s Area Director, Ben Gilligan, said that the idea was designed to help spread some happiness to staff and passengers during lockdown:

“Our drivers carry NHS staff, retail workers and other key employees to work every day, and we wanted to show our support for them, and spread a little happiness over the weekend.

Our drivers have been working really hard over the last few weeks in very difficult circumstances, but they have never lost their sense of humour and optimism.  We wanted to share that spirit with our passengers by adding a little fun to their day.”

Buses are currently running to special lockdown timetables, aimed at getting key workers to essential employment.  They will be running to a Sunday timetable on Bank Holiday Friday.

Ben Gilligan added that the government are still advising that people only travel by bus if their journey is essential, and that the public should not use the bus unless absolutely necessary.

“We know that some people are finding lockdown difficult, but we are appealing to everyone to stay at home this bank holiday weekend.  If the sun is shining, we know people will be tempted to travel to places like the seaside or the countryside, but for the sake of our drivers, and the key workers who have to travel by bus, please stay at home.”

Passengers can find the latest lockdown timetables on the East Yorkshire website at www.eastyorkshirebuses.co.ukor by downlading the East Yorkshire Buses app.
