No Rise in Domestic Abuse Reports in Scarborough Borough

No Rise in Domestic Abuse Reports in Scarborough Borough

Published by Jon Burke at 6:31am 1st May 2020.

It seems there hasn't been a rise in the number of reported incidents of domestic abuse in Scarborough borough during coronavirus.

That's according to Deputy Leader of the Council, Liz Colling.

It's against a backdrop of increases nationally - and it's being given a cautious welcome.

But Cllr Colling said it could mean something else:

"It might mean that people do not understand they can report. So, even though our country is in lockdown, you can still leave your property if you need to because of abuse or violence. If you're at risk of harm, dial 999."

She's been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio..

If you call 999 from a mobile, you can also press 5 5 to be put through to the police, without having to speak.

The same applies from a landline, but all you have to do is stay silent.
