Whitby Creates More Than 100 Cakes For Captain Tom Moore's Birthday

Published by Karen Liu at 2:27pm 30th April 2020.

More than 100 cakes have been created across Whitby to celebrate the 100th birthday of Captain Tom Moore.

It was in response to a call by staff and students at Caedmon College.

The war veteran has raised more than £29 millon for NHS charities by walking 100 laps of his garden.

For his birthday, a Hurricane and a Spitfire did a fly past above his home earlier today.

He also received the rank of honorary Colonel.

Simon Riley, Principal at Caedmon College, said:

"The school was inspired to Bake 100 cakes for Captain Tom as a tribute to his magnificent fundraising efforts and to thank all the local people working in the NHS, care homes and other key jobs.

We put the call out on Thursday afternoon last week to our staff and students to bake a cake and by Tuesday evening we had reached the target."

The cakes include a variety of sponge and chocolate offerings, all iced or decorated with the words Tom, 100 or NHS.

All the bakers have been asked to make a £5 contribution to Captain Tom’s JustGiving page.

Mr Riley added:

“The response has been excellent. NHS rainbows have been the most popular cake decoration.

We pleased to be able to contribute to Captain Tom’s fundraising efforts and to help celebrate this remarkable achievements”.

The school is going to send a special birthday card, featuring all 100 cakes, to Captain Tom.

Students at Whitby Sixth Form have also taken part in this fundraising effort, including those in Year 11 from both Eskdale and Caedmon who have recently enrolled onto the Virtual Sixth Form that was launched this week.
