Whitby Police Fine Two People For Unnecessary Journey

Published by Karen Liu at 6:21am 24th April 2020.

Police in Whitby have issued fines to two people for making an unnecessary journey to the town.

Yesterday, officers gave tickets to two individuals who had driven from Sheffield for a day out to Whitby.

The force says the journey was in breach of Government guidelines but said:

"Whitby Police would like to thank everyone who is adhering to the current government lockdown advice in an effort to keep each other safe.

We will endeavour to support our community through what is a testing time for us all and take enforcement action where necessary.

Keep up the stay safe advice Whitby and thank you from us all at Whitby Police."

it is not an offence to be in breach of Government guidelines. It is only an offence to be in breach of the Regulations by being away from the place where you live without a "reasonable excuse". So its not illegal to travel from Sheffield to Whitby, its the motive behind the travel that is important.
