Scarborough Company Keeps Both Cleaning Supplies and Fundraising Flowing

A Scarborough cleaning supplies company has been talking about the challenges involved in keeping essential supplies flowing to key organisations on the Yorkshire Coast during the Coronavirus outbreak and how they managed to find a way to help raise funds for Saint Catherine's Hospice.

Spectrum Cleaning Solutions act as suppliers for a number of large business along the coast including the likes of Saint Catherine's.

Commercial Director, Tim Chadwick says maintaining supplies for some of the areas key organisations has been a challenge and has involved taking some unusual steps.

“Keeping our stock levels at the right level has been a huge challenge over the past weeks. At the start of the lockdown and due to haulage shortages there were times we needed to go direct to our suppliers’ manufacturing facilities to pick up products through the night so as to ensure that we could continue to deliver the products our customers required by day.  A great team effort.

Throughout the pandemic, we have been in close contact with all of our regular suppliers as well as working with other companies that we have had relationships with in the past, bulk buying products when available ensuring we can maintain availability to our customers. Some products have proved more difficult, such as hand sanitisers, but we’re really happy to say that we have been able to stabilise these issues and have a great range of the most popular and heavily required products available to our customers.

To ensure we could support our local community, more recently we have diversified our range of products to make it more appealing for the consumer market that are more brand-led than our commercial customers. Through our local delivery service, we’re bringing the products people know and trust into their homes.”

The company has also launched an initiative to help support Saint Catherine's fund raising efforts at a time when their traditional fundraising activities have been curtailed due to lockdown.

“Saint Catherine’s hospice has been a customer of ours for over 15 years. We feel privileged to supply the hospice with their cleaning and hygiene products and support the staff who are so dedicated to providing the best care they possibly can, in which ever role they are employed.

My mum was a volunteer for 15 years and as a business we have always tried to support the hospice with fundraising endeavours as we recognise their need to raise 6 million pounds per year to sustain the level of care.   

Like many others, over the years some friends and family have had to use Saint Catherine’s services, some using hospice at home, others the outpatient/in patient support and many say how they could not have got through coming to terms with their loss if it wasn’t for the bereavement support services.

When lockdown was first announced by the government, one of my first concerns was for Saint Catherine’s Hospice. Already under great financial pressures, the outbreak of Covid-19 only added further weight, now due to their inability to generate sustainable income from their usual fundraising activities.  Therefore, we decided we must do something to help during the pandemic."

Jo says the company has been able to change it's focus during lockdown to help more local people get hold of cleaning products and saw an opportunity to help Saint Catherine's at the same time.

"Spectrum usually only supply cleaning and hygiene products and services to businesses, however, through our partnership with The Cleaning Collective (www.thecleaningcollective.co.uk), we decided to reach out to the locality and offer a delivery to your door service to domestic households so no one would have to go without cleaning essentials at this challenging time. We did some advertising on the radio and on our social channels, and told everyone that we would donate 5% of domestic turnover to Saint Catherine’s Hospice during this crisis.

Through doing this, we hope to raise thousands of pounds to help support St Catherine’s in continuing the invaluable services that they provide every single day. We hope that the local community can get behind us and help us to our target.”
