Petition Calls For Council To Suspend Seasonal Beach Ban

Published by Karen Liu at 12:34pm 20th April 2020.

An online petition is calling for Scarborough Borough Council to suspend the seasonal dog beach ban until social distancing rules are relaxed.

The authority confirmed last week that the ban will come into force as usual on May 1st.

The petition has been started by local resident, Margaret Inglesant, who said:

"I think at the moment, the reason the dog ban exists every year is to keep the beaches clean; but it's to actually to keep them away from the tourists that are there because the beaches are so busy and there isn't the space.

But currently, there is the space for that and at the moment people are very restricted anyway, what is the purpose of having to do this now? What's the damage of just extending it for a little bit and making people feel a little bit better?"

Margaret has been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Matthew Pells:
