Yorkshire Coast Warned About Fire Scam Calls

Published by Jon Burke at 8:02am 19th April 2020.

Residents on the Yorkshire coast are being warned about fake calls from the fire service.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue says victims have been contacted by scammers, claiming to be them.

The service says it does sometimes call people, but you should be able to tell the difference.

Station Manager, Tony Walker, said:

"We will never ever ask for personal details and we'll never ask you to buy someting from the fire service, so if you do get a call like that you can call our headquarters to see if it's legitimate. If you're not sure, just hang up and dont't worry. If we need to get in touch with you, we will do."

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue can be contacted on 01609 780150.

Why does the fire service sometimes telephone people and on what basis? Is this limited to people who have made previous contact with the service or do they just randomly select landline numbers from the telephone directory?
