North Yorkshire Residents Thanked For Easter Preparations

North Yorkshire Residents Thanked For Easter Preparations

Published by Karen Liu at 7:01am 15th April 2020.

A big thank you has been issued to all North Yorkshire residents who responded well to an appeal to be prepared for the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Before the weekend, North Yorkshire County Council asked people who are made vulnerable and isolated by the Covid-19 pandemic and who need help with things like shopping, prescriptions and other essentials to make preparations.

The widespread positive response to this call meant there was only modest demand for help with shopping and other essentials over the four-day break.

Gary Fielding, the County Council’s Director of Strategic Resources said:

“We thank all those who prepared for the weekend and helped others to do so and all those who are helping their neighbours through this crisis.

We also thank the 23 community support organisations with which we are working and the countless volunteers making a difference in communities across the county.

The impressive response to our request meant that although we still had a lot of calls to our customer service centre, demand for help with shopping and other essentials was low. That helps us to prioritise those people who are most vulnerable.

Support for the small number of people who needed help over the weekend was delivered by our own staff, the NHS and Ready for Anything volunteers.

This allowed the people who make up the community support organisations and the incredible volunteers they work with to take a well-deserved and much-needed break.

All 23 community support organisations are now back at work, continuing to provide invaluable help to people who don’t have a local support network.

Our message to people in need remains the same: you are not alone. If support is not available from family, friends or neighbours or local groups, you should contact our customer service centre.”

People in need of help or who need the county council to support vulnerable friends and neighbours should call the customer service centre on 01609 780780. The centre is open seven days a week, 8am to 5.30pm.

As well as looking out for neighbours and family, county residents are reminded of the importance of staying at home except for essential journeys and maintaining a safe distance of at least two metres if out, as well as washing hands regularly to help to keep the disease at bay.
