Speed Camera Vans Still Deployed In North Yorkshire

Published by Karen Liu at 8:01am 13th April 2020.

Speed camera vans are still being deployed in North Yorkshire.

Police say they are being used tactically to target speeding hot spots.

Lisa Winward, Chief Constable of the county's force, said:

"They are still out but being deployed from an intelligence basis.

We've had quite a lot of members of the public contacting us saying they're very concerned about people using our more than usual empty roads as racing tracks, putting other people at risk.

There was somebody prosecuted for going at 130 miles per hour just recently.

So we are responding to those calls by placing the safety camera vans out on our at risk country roads, where people are flouting the law and putting other road users at risk.

We absolutely want to protect people on our roads and keep them safe; and can only do that if we tackle those who are not abiding by the law and putting others at risk.

We want to protect our national health service from those terrible collisions that can happen as a result of those speeds.

We also use our safety camera vans with ANPR capability so they're also protecting people from criminal use of our roads.

So they're being used in a limited way, based on that wider protection of the public in this time of crisis".
