Appeal For Scarborough Borough Council To Close Amenities

Appeal For Scarborough Borough Council To Close Amenities

Published by Karen Liu at 7:00am 10th April 2020.

Residents in Scarborough have been appealing to the Borough Council to close some local amenities.

It is after pictures emerged of youngsters gathering at the football and basketball court on Scarborough's North Bay.

The authority says someone will look into the lighting, as it is thought that would encourage groups to gather.

This comes as North Yorkshire Police says it has received many calls from concerned residents reporting groups of young people meeting up in public.

The Government advice is that we should only go out when absolutely necessary, and only with members of our own household.

Lisa Winward, Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police, said:

"This is an unprecedented health crisis and therefore our job is to protect people from the spread of the virus, so we keep them safe, we save lives and we protect the NHS.

That's the message for our young people also, so those young people who understandably, might not understand the gravity of the situation, going out and meeting friends.

Please, please stay at home, for your own health and those you might spread it to.

We are happy for people to contact us, we can go and engage from a safe distance and try and explain to those young people the risks.

We're also engaging with people's parents so that parents can advise their children, and we can encourage those children and those parents to stay at home together, know where your children are.

We want to engage with young people and remind them they too have a part to play in the community of keeping our community safe."
