"Don't Visit North York Moors" Says Park Authority

After seeing a dramatic reduction in the amount of people heading out into the North York Moors over the last week, the National Park Authority is reminding everyone that no one should be travelling into or around the National Park unless this is absolutely essential.

The Authority say that, as clearly stated on the government's website, everyone should be avoiding all non-essential travel and permitted daily exercise should be done locally using open spaces near to your home. This is the key message that the North York Moors National Park Authority would urge people to continue to follow going into the weekend.

Andy Wilson, Chief Executive of the North York Moors National Park Authority, said:

"We are so grateful that visitors and National Park residents have been following the Government's guidance over the last few weeks. We have seen a huge drop in footfall at many popular beauty spots and we want this to continue.

We must all take responsibility for helping to slow the spread of COVID-19 and we can do this by simply staying at home and avoiding all nonessential travel."

North Yorkshire Police would also like to remind people of the importance of following the Government's advice. Assistant Chief Constable Mike Walker, of North Yorkshire Police, said:

"Our officers have been heartened that more and more people are following the Government measures and we need to keep this up to help protect our NHS and save lives.

Our officers are on regular patrols through towns, villages and rural areas of the North York Moors, and indeed every part of North Yorkshire. We are also continuing to engage with motorists to ensure they understand the importance of the 'stay home, save lives' message. We hope that this weekend will continue to show fewer people heading out into the North York Moors."

The Authority say that public rights of way everywhere remain open for local use as permitted by law and social distancing measures should always be maintained, such as keeping at least 2 metres apart and only going outside with members of your own household.
