Distress Flare Used In Flamborough During Clapping Tribute

Published by Karen Liu at 7:31am 3rd April 2020.

Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team is reminding residents about the use of flares.

It is after they were called out yesterday (Thursday 2nd April) at 8.15pm to Flamborough after they saw a red distress flare.

The team says it turned out it was set off by a member of the public as part of the 8pm clapping event.

It said:

"The team were tasked by Humber Coastguard alongside Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 912 to reports of a red distress flare which had been sighted in the Flamborough area.

A thorough search of the area was carried out when news came to our operations centre that a flare had been set off by a member of the public in Flamborough as part of the NHS 8pm celebrations.

Whilst we wholeheartedly support our colleagues in the NHS, members of the public are advised that the misuse of distress flares is a serious criminal offence."
