Changes to Scarborough Council Services

Published by Local Democracy Reporter Carl Gavaghan at 12:26pm 25th March 2020. (Updated at 1:04pm 25th March 2020)

Scarborough Council has released information on what services will be operating during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The authority has said the residential bin collections will continue as normal on their regular days, though businesses that have been forced to close can contact the authority to cancel trade waste collections.

The Customer First centres in Whitby and Filey have closed but the Scarborough St Nicholas Street service will remain open “only for the most vulnerable residents”.

People are asked not to attend unless that have no other choice.

The centre’s revised opening hours are 10am to 2pm, Monday to Friday.

The Everyone Active Scarborough Sports Village, Whitby Leisure Centre and Pindar Leisure Centre are closed.

A council spokesman added:

“Our parks, play areas and gardens remain open for you to exercise in, but we ask you to be mindful of the government’s advice on social distancing.”

Funeral services [at Woodlands Crematorium] are taking place as normal but we are restricting services to a maximum of 10 people per service.

As a consequence of updated government guidelines, the waiting room, crematorium office and other public spaces at the crematorium are closed. Services can be streamed live, free of charge, on the internet for the benefit of mourners not attending the service in person.

Please contact us ( 01723 372652/354393) or your funeral director for further information.”

Parking enforcement in residential areas will also be relaxed to help those who are now working from home or self-isolating. Offences, including parking on double yellow lines and obstructing entrances or roads will still be dealt with.

Seasonal beach chalets will now not be accessible until May 31. Those people have booked a chalet will be contacted about a refund.

North Yorkshire County Council also announced this week that its household waste recycling centres in Whitby and Scarborough have been closed.

The county’s libraries have all be closed due to the lockdown.
