Scarborough Survivors Moves To Telephone Support

Published by Karen Liu at 6:01am 25th March 2020.

A Scarborough charity says it has had to move to providing telephone support, due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Scarborough Survivors helps those across the Borough with mental heath distress.

It has had to close its Resource Centre, on 9 Alma Square, and its Crisis Cafe for the time being.

Chief Officer at Scarborough Survivors, Andrea Woolcott, said:

"I think we're probably expecting an increase in people who aren't members of Scarborough Survivors.

I think it's important to stress that the telephone number are for anybody within our community that's struggling with poor mental health, anxiety or just needs somebody to talk to if they're isolated from other family or friends.

Each of the people that are going to be on the end of the phone receiving the calls, all have counselling qualifications and experience so we'll be able to do some de-escalation work with people.

We're also in touch with our partner agencies, so if somebody is running out of food, or needs some shopping then we can link them to the other agencies."

Anyone who needs support is asked to call 07516916290 and the phone line will be operated from 9.30am through to 1am, 7 days a week.

People are asked to be patient as they will be answering calls, and anyone who cannot get through is asked to leave a contact number, and they will ring back.
