Whitby Business Innovates to Beat Virus Slowdown

Local businesses on the Yorkshire Coast are finding they are having to adapt to survive the economic impact of Coronavirus.

Whitby Brewery say they were badly hit by the forced closure of pubs who buy most of their produce, Richard Wells from the Brewery says that they are finding new ways to keep the business going.

They published the following statement on Sunday:

'We have reviewed the situation today and have decided to close our off-licence shop after our trial day yesterday.

'From where we are situated on the cliff top it is difficult to gauge the number of people in Whitby town centre. We have been left very unnerved by the masses of people not heeding social distancing rules in the pictures taken in Whitby yesterday.

'We have a responsibility to our town and don’t want to in any way encourage people to travel to Whitby unnecessarily, given the current situation.

'Yesterday does not sit well with us as people, or as a business. We will continue operating our online shop for people living further afield, and will offer home deliveries to local Whitby people.

'We have added bags in boxes to our online store now as well.'

While those innovations are helping to keep some cash flow going Richard says the Governments pledge to pay 80% of wages is also a real help and should help them to keep their staffing intact.
