Yorkshire Coast Fire Services Celebrate International Women's Day

Published by Karen Liu at 7:01am 8th March 2020.

Fire services on the Yorkshire Coast are celebrating International Women's Day today.

Scarborough crews will be making pledges promoting a gender equal society.

Ahead of today, they have been attending career fairs to try and encourage women to join them in various roles.

Graeme Casper, Scarborough Fire Station Manager, said:

"I think historically it was males that applied for the fire service.

We have quite a number of varied positions, it's not all fire fighting, but we want to encourage females to take the operational side and be a firefighter.

We need to represent the community we serve and we do need more ladies thinking about joining.

Across the county, we have a number of female firefighters both in the whole-time and the retained duty service.

They do everything a male firefighter will do and very well too.

There's nothing to be frightened about; if they apply then we can have a chat with them or if they want to go to the local fire station, then call in.

Come and have a chat with us and we'll tell you what it's all about and we'll help them through the process."

For today, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service have some social media scheduled.

They have also organised some mentoring workshops for its internal staff who are women.
