Scarborough South Cliff Stabilisation Completed

Scarborough South Cliff Stabilisation Completed

Published by Karen Liu at 2:01pm 3rd March 2020.

A scheme to stabilise the cliffs behind Scarborough's Spa complex has now finished.

The project started in May 2018 and a 'completion ceremony' was held earlier today (Tuesday 3rd March) in the South Cliff.

The work has costed £16 million, which has been mainly funded by a Defra grant of £11.6m, administered by the Environment Agency, with the difference being made up by contributions from Scarborough Borough Council and North Yorkshire County Council.

Ed Hinton, Senior Advisor for Flood and Coastal Risk Management at the Environment Agency, said:

"It's a huge project and it's really designed to preserve the legacy of the Spa building and protect the businesses and homes from both the sea and the inherently over steep nature of the cliff.

It's a real testament to the design of the scheme in that, there's over 200 steel piles and over 4,500 soil nails that have gone into this cliff, and you can't really see them.

All you can see is a really lovely and surfaced amenable space that I'm sure the residents of Scarborough, and visitors to the town, will really enjoy."

Ed has been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Paddy in the Morning:

The completed work means that work to South Cliff gardens can begin.

Last year, the project has received more than £5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Scarborough Borough Council.

David Auton, Chair of the South Cliff Community Group, said:

"It's a fantastic day to finally see these cliffs safe and sound and lasting for many generations.

The community is really, really pleased that the gardens now are open again and they can have a walk into the town as they want to.

There's a lot of exciting things going on with new planting of trees, new play areas for young children and I think wi-fi is going to be going in.

There's loads of things going in to protect the environment."

David has been telling Yorkshire Coast Radio's Paddy in the Morning about plans to spruce up South Cliff gardens:

I can't get over how finished it looks - I was expecting it to look rather bare for a year or so.
