Scarborough Woman Nominated For National Award

Scarborough Woman Nominated For National Award

Published by Karen Liu at 11:38am 26th February 2020.

A Scarborough woman has been nominated for a National Diversity Award.

Hannah Green, 23, is up for 'Positive Role Model for Gender'.

It is after she had articles published in two national newspapers about her experiences with homelessness and PTSD.

She has also recently decided to speak publicly and has been asked to talk at several events across the country.

Regarding her nomination, Hannah said:

"It means a lot and it makes me feel like I'm making a difference, which is what I want to do.

If I can help just one person then that's just amazing."

She says she wants homelessness to be tackled:

"Well I think it's about funding prevention; funding mental health care and support.

There's very strong links between trauma, addiction, mental health, and homelessness.

I think that we have to tackle the root causes of it instead of just trying to treat it as we find it."

Hannah added:

"In January 2018 I ended up homeless, was suicidal and self harming regularly.

I ended up in local Nightstop services, hostels, supported lodgings and temporary flats over the course of the year.

I started surfing therapy and ended up volunteering with the Wave Project and doing my surf instructor course.

I recently moved into my own flat and started volunteering at Scarborough Survivors.

I am trying to share my experiences publicly, including on social media in the hope that it will help and inspire other people who may be struggling, especially young people."

This year's 'National Diversity Awards 2020' will be held in Liverpool on 25th September.

The event recognises nominees in their respective fields of diversity including age, disability, gender, race, faith, religion and sexual orientation.
