Series Of Climate Change Talks On Yorkshire Coast

Published by Karen Liu at 10:33am 21st February 2020.

Climate activists in Scarborough are hosting a series of talks this weekend on the Yorkshire Coast.

It has been organised by the town's Extinction Rebellion group.

Stephanie Pride, who is a member there, said:

"The 'Heading for Extinction' tour presents some of the latest climate science about where we're at at the moment, and why it's absolutely essential to start acting now and quickly to avert the worse possible effects of climate change further down the line.

It's also about training people about how to be more effective activists."

The first session will be held from midday today (Friday 21st February) at the Whitby Friendship Rowing Club, New Way Ghaut, Church Street, followed by an evening of Rebel songs.

There will also be a social at the Black Swan pub from 9pm, featuring music from Bongoman and the Bongomaniacs and the Counterfeit Celts.

Tomorrow (Saturday 22nd) the venue is the meeting room at The Star in Mitford Street, Filey, with the session running from 12 noon until 4pm.

There will be a further talks and training at The Queens Hotel in High Street, Bridlington Old Town, from 5pm until 9pm on the same day.

Finally, there will be a talk in Scarborough on Sunday (23rd) at The Waterhouse in St Thomas Street. This will also be followed by a gig featuring the same artists.

There will also be entertainment and refreshments provided - and it is all free of charge.

Last year, Scarborough Borough Council declared a climate emergency.

Stephanie added:

"Although it might not be obvious what the Council's done, at least they've got a task group together and they're consulting people on what kind of things would help everybody cut their emissions.

We're holding them to account on what they say they're going to do, and trying to get them to provide targets."
