Scarborough Failure Led To Westlife Call!

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 10:11am 21st February 2020. (Updated at 9:18am 22nd February 2020)

Westlife's Nicky Byrne has told Paddy In The Morning how his Westlife career may never have happened, had his trial with Scarborough FC gone better!

In the mid 1990's, Nicky played football for Leeds United as a goalkeeper. After being released at Under 18's level, he told Paddy he had two trials, one with Cambridge United and one with Scarborough FC.

But, at the former McCain Stadium in Scarborough, he conceded four goals and the night only got worse, as he explained to Paddy:

"I remember walking out of the ground after the game, head in my hands. I had to make my way back to Leeds and there was no train. I walked into a local kebab shop and ordered a taxi back to Leeds and it cost me £100 or something stupid"!

Westlife bring their 'Stadiums In The Summer' Tour to Scarborough Open Air Theatre on Wednesday 17th June.

Nicky also answered listener's questions, one of which asked about the strangest thing they'd seen in their 20 years:

"Seeing a couple of lads having a fight during You Raise Me Up was one of the ones that stand out"!
