Bridlington To Get Series Of New Plaques

Bridlington To Get Series Of New Plaques

Published by Karen Liu at 11:45am 19th February 2020.

Bridlington is set to have a series of new plaques installed, highlighting places of special interest.

Residents are being asked to vote for their four favourites from a shortlist.

It is part of the Bridlington Quay Townscape Heritage project.

The plaques are intended to complement the Maritime Trail boards and markers and the plaque to the Victoria Rooms on Garrison Square, as well as the blue plaques in the Old Town.

Andrew Uttley, Townscape Heritage Officer, said:

"These are ranging essentially from Lawrence of Arabia, to the Hawaiian Princes who brought surfing to the UK, by surfing in Bridlington, through to commemorating events during World War Two.

There is definitely a wide variety of heritage and history associated with the town; and that's part of the project and this activity really, to raise awareness of that."

Alternatively, you can visit the Bridlington Local Studies Library until Monday 2nd March for a display on the nominations and voting slips.

The four choices that receive the most votes will be selected for a plaque.

The scheme is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, for which they are providing funding towards other activities and the repair and restoration of properties within the defined Townscape Heritage Area which includes King Street, Cliff Street, Garrison Street, The Crescent and Marlborough Terrace. Funds from the NLHF also contributed to the cost of the on-going works at Garrison Square.

That's going to boost tourism, oh wait the (ex) coach park is having shops built on it and the new coach park is at the far end of the town almost in the next town.
