New Scarborough Nightclub Could 'Help Night Time Economy'

New Scarborough Nightclub Could 'Help Night Time Economy'

Published by Karen Liu with contributions by Local Democracy Reporter Carl Gavaghan at 1:59pm 18th February 2020.

The owners of a new nightclub in Scarborough reckon it could help the night time economy.

Frazer Jones, and his friend Martin Weaver, is looking to open 'Decades Bar and Club' on Aberdeen Walk.

They have applied to Scarborough Borough Council for a premises licence, which is out to consultation until the 11th of March.

It will have a set of strict conditions aimed at alleviating fears of crime, noise and disorder.

Frazer, who operates his Decades brand in Tamworth, said:

"Because of what we offer, it's more of a friendlier environment.

We're not saying nothing would happen, but we can control that by the things we have in place. We'd have security staff on the door and in the premises at the same time.

We've worked very closely with the police and the council.

One thing we're going to be absolutely positive about is that we will be making sure that there isn't no disorder of any kind."

Martin said:

"I think the Scarborough nightlife needed something adding to it; so that people felt that it got to midnight and they didn't want to venture down into town if they've been up in Falsgrave.

We were never saying that what we do is better than anybody else.

What other venues do appeals to their market, and the idea was that if we could keep people out a little bit longer, everybody else benefits.

The whole night time economy starts to grow and that's something that's important."

Decades Bar and Club in Scarborough will have free entry, appeal to all ages, and create local jobs.

Frazer added:

"The music we play is 80s/90s/00s party music, it’s not house or garage or anything like that, that’s not what we do.

In Tamworth, you can see the whole club dancing to the Macarena at 1am for example. We say it’s like a wedding party every night."

Under the plans, Decades Nightclub would be open until 4.15am Monday to Wednesday and then half an hour later on Thursday to Sundays.

Music will be played until 4am Monday to Wednesday and then until 4.30am at the rest of the week, with alcohol served at the same times, though Frazer said the club would be looking to open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the outset.

He said:

"We don’t want to attract trouble, that is not what we are about. We want people to have a fun night out."

The building can hold more than 1,000 revellers but initially, just one floor with a capacity of around 300 will be in use as the upper floor requires significant work before it can be utilised.

Frazer added that it is hoped Decades could be open for Easter, depending on the licensing process.

He and Martin have been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Karen Liu:

They have set up a dedicated Facebook page here:

As this club will be open after 4.00am can you tell me just where it will help the night time economy of Scarborough.

As 99.9% of shops don't open at 4.00am I think the only people who are going to make money are the club owners who think opening right through the night is acceptable.
