Real Living Wage For Scarborough Borough Workers

Workers in the Borough of Scarborough are set to benefit from a campaign by the council.

It says it wants to maximise their earning potential and it is part of the authority's 'Building a Better Borough' programme.

Liz Colling, Cabinet Member for Economy, Communities and Commercial, said:

"Our priority is around inclusive growth; and there are specific issues in this borough.

Some of them are historical, some of them are related to the sectors that we employ people in, and also seasonality of the work and perhaps low hours.

There are 49,800 people employed across the council area, but 18,426 of those are paid below the Living Wage."

The UK Living Wage is currently £9.30.

Cllr. Colling added:

"It's clear to us that we do have an issue about low wages in the borough.

So we need to do something about that and we can start as a council, by paying the living wage to our staff.

This is something we have done before but we want to go one step further this time; so we would sign up to the Living Wage Foundation.

We make a pledge to work with our partners and our supplies to encourage them to pay the living wage themselves, and slowly move the prosperity."

The Borough of Scarborough currently has the highest number of jobs paid below the Living Wage in the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding region.

Through the Living Wage Foundation campaign, the council wants to work with local employers to change that statistic, support residents out of poverty, reduce their dependence on in work benefits and give them a feeling of pride and respect for the work they do and their employer. 

Given that a high proportion of people working in the borough are also residents that spend their money locally, paying more people a real Living Wage would have a positive knock on effect on the local economy.

The campaign would encourage as many local organisations as possible to become a Living Wage employer, with the council leading by example.

Organisations that pay their staff a real Living Wage report benefiting from improved employee retention, increased staff morale, reduction in employee sick time, greater customer satisfaction, improved productivity and a better reputation.

Earlier this week, Cabinet approved the report and now an appropriate organisation will be identified to head up the campaign and a detailed campaign plan will be prepared for a future Cabinet meeting, which will include the council’s Economic Development team identifying the organisations that are already paying a real Living Wage and working with those that aren’t, to tackle the barriers they may be experiencing and encourage them to take the necessary steps to becoming, where financially possible, Living Wage employers.

Scarborough Council employs nearly 50,000 people but over 18,000 are paid below the living wage.

So who are the 32,000 who are paid the higher wages..

Totally agree with you Zara,SBC is wasting money hand over fist,some employees park illegally,in loading bays,the only thing they are loading are there belly with food from local shops,and yes I have witnessed it.

so once again lets spend money on an organisation to head up the campaign - how much is that going to cost the taxpayer? Maybe if the council spent less time organising new committees and surveys and consultations they would have time and money to actually spend on the services the taxpayer wants. Also would not need to increase the council tax so much... This council is just like the last full of words and committees and low on actions. Not only are they ripping the local business off with exorbitant rents and the useless DBID they now want to bully them into paying wages that they may not be able to afford.

The idea of a living wage is in theory a good one. But, for families it only results in reduction in any low income benefits often cancelling out the benefits. Yes, the state reduces it's payout but the struggling employers often react by cutting hours or contract terms making the whole exercise pointless. Yes, morally it's better people pay their own way but in a town and area based on mostly seasonal job's at the pay level, it may on result in less jobs due to wage bills and more work requirements for low paid workers. In the case of SBC making local taxpayers shoulder this is unacceptable, maybe a paycut for council staff above the lower paygrades would be more appropriate to fund it, just a suggestion!
