Scarborough MP Reiterates Need For Services At Hospital

Published by Karen Liu at 6:01am 4th February 2020.

Scarborough's MP says he'll be making sure the changes to oncology services are a temporary measure.

Last week, we told you that all first appointments for new cancer patients will be provided in Grimsby or Cottingham.

It's claimed the changes are temporary with a full review after three months.

Robert Goodwill said:

"The last thing you need if you're suffering from cancer, you're going to have bad effects from chemotherapy or radiotherapy, is to have to make long journeys to places like Grimsby and sometimes on a daily basis.

I've heard stories of people having treatment at York Hospital, for example, early in the morning; but because of the unreliability of the train services or the difficulty with making that journey, that they've had to stay overnight in York and that isn't really something that people should be expected to do.

We need those services at Scarborough."

York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, who runs Scarborough and Bridlington hospitals, refused our request for an interview last week too.

Robert added:

"I can understand to some extent why they've done that.

I can't really understand why they don't talk to you and explain to you what's happened, because the York Trust do commission these services from the Hull Trust.

It was at very short notice that they withdrew those and this sort of thing shouldn't happen.

I'll be making it clear to all those involved that this should only be a very temporary measure and we should get in place the services at Scarborough that people need."

Actions speak louder than words Mr Goodwill. Do something positive about it instead of just the usual soundbites. Get together with your co MP Mr Hollinrake and actually DO something for your constituents.
