Youth Recycle Bicycle Scheme In Scarborough

Youth Recycle Bicycle Scheme In Scarborough

Published by Karen Liu at 6:01am 1st February 2020.

A Scarborough community hub's teaching children how to fix a bike today.

The Gallows Close Centre, which aims to provide help to vulnerable people, is leading the weekly scheme.

It's for those aged 10 and over and youngsters can either bring their own bikes, or use one provided by the charity.

They will then be given the option to buy the bike, or if they don't require it, then the centre can sell it to raise funds to be put back into their 'Young Peoples Project'.

It's from 12pm until 3pm at Gallows Close Centre on Endcliff Crescent, Scarborough, YO12 6HZ.

Kimmie Adison, Community Manager, said:

"There's a lot of children in the area that we surround that don't have the privileges of having a bike, so that's one of our main reasons as to why we're doing the scheme.

One of the other reasons is the activity side of it, and a few months ago, they did a little sponsored bike ride along the old railway tracks, which was really good."

Kimmie says they do need people to help fundraise for them:

"We're now in a situation where funds are beginning to get a little bit low.

We try to keep the classes as low as possible, especially for non-working families; but again, we still have to cover our overheads and make sure that we're going to keep the doors open for vulnerable people in the area."

The 'youth recycle bicycle scheme' runs every Saturday from 12pm to 3pm until March 28th.
