Andy's Man Club Arrives In Scarborough

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 11:55am 30th January 2020. (Updated at 12:44pm 30th January 2020)

Andy's Man Club begins in Scarborough next week with the aim to get men with mental health issues talking.

The initiative was started in Halifax by a professional rugby player Luke Ambler, after his brother Andy took his own life at the age of 23.

Luke started a weekly group in the West Yorkshire town for men to get together and simply talk. There are now 25 groups around the country under the name 'Andy's Man Club'.

The new Scarborough club will meet every Monday evening from 7:00pm at Scarborough Library.

One of the organisers Carl Martin explains why he wanted to bring the group to Scarborough:

"Originally I wanted to get some support for myself. I saw about Andy's Man Club online. I drove out to Hull to find out what it was all about. It's helped me gain direction in my life and find myself. And in trying to get it set up in Scarborough, it's given me some motivation"

Gordon Thompson will be helping on the night and explains how it'll work:

"We'll be outside from 6:30pm because it's a difficult step to take to come in we know that. We'll welcome people in,  have a cup of tea, we'll have an informal chat. Get things off out chest really".

Fellow organiser Shaun Tymon has been to the Hull club and says it's very informal with no expectations:

"I was very surprised at the Hull group how freely men opened up. It's a very safe environment. People don't have to talk if they don't want to. You don't have to tell everyone all your problems. You can let other people do the talking but most people do talk, because it's a safe environment with men from all walks of life but all with that one thing in common".

Andy's Man Club starts Monday 3rd February at 7:00pm at Scarborough Library and will run every Monday except Bank Holidays.

A brilliant scheme.
I have a friend in Leeds who was minutes away from ending his life by jumping off a bridge.

He was talked down, went to Andys, and has never looked back.

All he really needed was to talk to someone and understand he was not alone.
