Scarborough and Ryedale Carers Resource are raising awareness about what support they have to offer.

It's particularly aimed at young people who care for family and friends.

The charity's supporting a national campaign for Young Carers Awareness Day, called 'Count Me In'.

Jodie Peckitt, Service Manager at Scarborough and Ryedale Carers Resource, said:

"It's calling for education providers and people out there in the community to proactively identify young people that are maybe supporting somebody in their family, or friends, who are particularly looking after someone who's maybe feeling isolated, worried, have an illness, a disability or misuse of drugs or alcohol.

It's a big surprise that there are young people out there who hold roles like supporting their mum or dad; and helping them get up in on a morning, reminding them to take medication, helping them get dressed, or carrying things, or making their breakfast.

They'll do all that before they go to school on a morning and sometimes those young carers might struggle to come in on time in the morning or they might be a bit worried about the sort of things happening at home."
