23 Year Old Rubbish on Filey Beach

A packet from 1997 was among the rubbish collected from Filey's beach on Saturday.

The Yorkshire Wild Life trusts Waves of Waste beach clean at Coble Landing on Saturday saw 24Kg of rubbish collected from the beach by volunteers.

In amongst the items collected in the teams 100m survey area were 57 cigarette butts, 13 cable ties and a packet dated 1997.

Last year volunteer beach cleaners carried out 72 beach sweeps on the Yorkshire Coast removing over 90 sacks of rubbish.

The Yorkshire Wildlife trust says the waves of waste project has been supported by over 12 hundred volunteers.

In 2019 the top ten items the volunteers collected from Yorkshire's beaches were..

1.       Plastic/polystyrene pieces (0-50cm)
2.       Cigarette butts
3.       String/cord/rope/net (thickness 0-1cm)
4.       Packets (crisps, sweets, lolly’s etc.)
5.       Glass
6.       Fishing line
7.       Wet wipes
8.       Plastic bags 
9.       Cloth (clothing, shoes, towels etc.)
10.     Caps and lids
