Whitby Town Council has announced there's a new Mayor of the town.

Cllr. Rebecca Pearson is stepping down from the role due to health reasons.

On its website, it said:

"Councillor Mrs Linda Wild has assumed the role Mayor of Whitby following the resignation of Rebecca Pearson from the Town Council on 21st January 2020.

Councillor Wild has served as Deputy Mayor since May 2018 and will continue as Mayor until May 2020."

Linda said:

"Well it's early days yet but I'm really looking forward to serving.

I've been the Deputy Mayor since May 2018.

It's a real privilege and it's a very, very interesting job.

Whitby is a fantastic place, it really is, and I feel so lucky to live here; and I feel even luckier to be the Mayor.

Rebecca was the Deputy Mayor for two years, and then she'd been the Mayor for a year and three quarters; so she's done quite a bit of work.

I am eager and there's some challenges ahead and I'm looking forward to facing those.

It's just an honour really, and a privilege to be the Mayor of Whitby."
